How to Convert a Fixed Shower Head to a Handheld Shower Head in Australia

You can usually convert a fixed shower head to a handheld shower head without major plumbing work. Most Australian shower fittings use a standard 1/2 inch BSP connection, so the upgrade can often be completed in just a few simple steps using a shower bracket, hose and handheld shower head.

If your shower has an unusual fitting, concealed plumbing or a built-in shower system, you may need an adapter or assistance from a plumber.

A handheld shower head gives you more flexibility for rinsing your hair, cleaning the shower, bathing children or pets, and can also make it easier to upgrade to a filtered shower head.

What You’ll Need

  • Handheld shower head
  • Shower hose
  • Handheld shower head mount or bracket
  • Plumber’s tape
  • Adjustable wrench, if required

Need Everything in One Set?

Nude Aqua’s Handheld Shower Set includes the main pieces needed for the conversion, including a filtered shower head, adjustable shower bracket, 1.5 m stainless steel shower hose and plumber’s tape.

Most standard Australian shower connections use a 1/2 inch BSP fitting, but it’s still a good idea to check your existing connection before installation.

How to Convert a Fixed Shower Head to a Handheld Shower Head

1. Remove the Existing Fixed Shower Head

Unscrew the old shower head from the shower arm by turning it anticlockwise.

If it is too tight to remove by hand, carefully use an adjustable wrench. Place a cloth around the fitting first to help protect the finish from scratches.

2. Clean the Shower Arm Threads

Remove any old plumber’s tape, residue or buildup from the exposed threads.

Starting with clean threads helps the new fitting sit properly and creates a better seal.

3. Apply Plumber’s Tape

Wrap plumber’s tape around the exposed threads 2 to 3 times clockwise.

Keep the tape smooth and close to the threads so it does not bunch up when you install the new shower mount.

4. Install the New Handheld Shower Head Mount

Screw the handheld shower head mount or bracket onto the shower arm (pipe coming out of the wall).

Tighten it securely by hand. Avoid overtightening, as too much force can damage the threads or fittings.

5. Attach the Shower Hose

Connect one end of the shower hose to the handheld shower mount.

Connect the handheld shower head to the other end of the hose.

Make sure the rubber washers are positioned correctly inside the hose fittings before tightening. In most cases, hand tightening is enough.

6. Turn On the Water and Check for Leaks

Turn the shower on and inspect each connection.

If you notice any leaking:

  • gently tighten the connection
  • check that the washer is sitting correctly
  • reapply plumber’s tape if needed

Once everything is secure and leak-free, your handheld shower head is ready to use.

Do Australian Shower Heads Use a Standard Size?

Most standard Australian shower fittings use a 1/2 inch BSP connection.

This means many handheld shower heads, shower hoses and shower brackets are compatible with standard Australian shower arms.

If your shower has an unusual fitting, concealed plumbing or a built-in shower system, you may need an adapter or assistance from a plumber.

Why Convert to a Handheld Shower Head?

A handheld shower head gives you more control over where the water goes and can make everyday showering more convenient.

It can be especially useful for:

  • washing and rinsing your hair
  • cleaning the shower
  • bathing children
  • washing pets
  • rinsing hard-to-reach areas
  • upgrading to a filtered shower head

It is also a practical option for apartments and homes where you want more flexibility without completely changing the shower system.
